MEET KAREN

THE

Karen Doughty lent an ear to many childhoods sexual abuse stories being shared for the first time. These stories were encouraged by Karen, who shares in her books how she broke through communication barriers that had kept her silent about her sexual abuse for decades. As a result of a transformative shift in thinking, a "movement" has emerged dedicated to helping individuals whose lives have been impacted by sexual abuse.

Karen's resilience and display of altruism are remarkable. It compliments her many hats: Author, Healer, Inspirational Speaker, Certified International Life Coach, Mentor, and Licensed/Ordained Minister.

Above all else, Karen's mission is to lessen the one in four girls and one in six boys molested before their eighteen birthday, confirming that her first encounter with molestation was at the tender age of 4. This horrific event and other instances of abuse played like a broken record in Karen's head. It lent itself to a vicious cycle of entrapment, but, Karen broke free, and her recovery became the catalyst for "TRANSFORMING LIVES AFFECTED BY SEXUAL ABUSE" --whether in unconventional settings like the Greyhound bus station or in front of a podium at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Professional Bio

Karen Doughty is an accomplished Author, Speaker, and Ambassador of Change, strongly committed to serving individuals who have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from sexual assault, rape, and incest. Born in New Orleans, Karen has dedicated her life to empowering survivors and helping them heal from their trauma.

Karen's passion for helping others started in 2004 when she began working with sexual assault non-profits. Since then, she has worked with various clients, including the Department of Veteran Affairs, Evangeline Sexual Assault Center, and Baton Rouge Children’s Advocacy Center. Karen's expertise in this area comes from her own personal experience, which she learned is unfortunately common. Her experience has fueled her desire to educate others and advocate for change.

Before embarking on her journey of helping others, Karen achieved corporate success by qualifying for the most difficult scheme using unique key codes in record-breaking time. However, she also struggled with a lifelong secret that she eventually uncovered. Her quest for knowledge led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Social Work and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice, which have given her a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding sexual assault.

Karen's commitment to empowering others comes from a deep understanding of the impact that sexual abuse can have on a person's soul, emotions, and behavior. Her experience has also made her keenly aware of seeking help and support. Karen's mission is to inspire others to break the cycle of abuse and to heal from the trauma they have experienced.

Karen's own struggles with the effects of sexual abuse culminated in a failed suicide attempt. However, she overcame her trauma and used her experience to help others. Her personal journey has been the driving force behind her mission to empower survivors and create positive change. Karen Doughty is a passionate advocate for survivors of sexual assault and inspires many.

Karen's personal triumph over sexual abuse has inspired her to share her journey with others. She expresses her joy from overcoming her trauma and has used her experience to help others do the same. Her passion for empowering survivors led her to write and publish her first book, the award-winning Empowered to Uproot the Seed of Abuse. The book received accolades and rave reviews, and Karen was honored to have it placed in libraries across Louisiana and Illinois. Her latest addition, Overcoming Child Sexual Abuse, is a companion to Empowered to Uproot, and both books have become essential resources for survivors and those seeking to support them.

In 2016, Karen received her license to minister under Ralph N Moore's teaching and earned an associate of Divinity in Christian Education from Charity Christian Center. This opened new doors for Karen in the transformation industry, and she became the CEO of Karen Doughty Transformation. As a speaker, Karen fearlessly addresses topics society often treats as taboo. She courageously speaks out about the impact of sexual abuse and how to break the cycle of trauma. Karen's message of empowerment and healing is powerful for survivors and their loved ones. She inspires many, having turned her own struggle into a source of strength and hope.

In 2017, Karen launched the "Let's Talk About" campaign to break the taboo around sexual abuse and encourage open and honest conversations about the issue. Karen's driving force is to teach people how to regain their strength after experiencing sexual abuse. Her hard work and dedication have spilled into various media outlets, as she has made guest appearances on television and radio shows to share her story. Her message resonates in articles, newspapers, and magazines, and her contact information is listed in Fox 8 New Orleans' Rolodex.

Karen founded Woman Rise, a 5013c non-profit organization that promotes resilience to enhance health education and the welfare of women of all ages and diversity. The organization provides support and resources to women who have experienced trauma, including sexual abuse.

She is a member of the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LAFASA) and the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) Speakers' Bureau. She is also a certified International Life Coach and the President and Founder of the Karen Doughty School of Healing, where she provides resources and training to individuals seeking to support survivors of sexual abuse.

Despite her numerous successes, Karen's most rewarding role is that of a mother to her child. She credits her faith for sustaining her during her darkest times and uses her experiences to inspire and empower others. For media requests, Karen can be reached by email at doughty.karen@yahoo.com.

My Story

iEnDURED

I remember vividly today as yesterday the encounters I had with child sexual abuse. Beginning at the tender age of 4, the evil befell me is synonymous with other instances of abuse I couldn’t fathom. Nevertheless, I endured. In an attempt to move forward, my loss of innocence couldn’t be denied. I began to suffer low self-esteem, while guilt and shame were already in progress. These and other child sexual abuse symptoms ensued well into my adulthood.

iSURVIVED

Despite my surviving childhood sexual abuse, in the aftermath, I experienced raging emotions, as well as psychological and behavioral effects. I felt hopeless, despondent, and rejected; any means of relief diminished as I began to evolve into a self-saboteur. When depression took its toll, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) arose, I was hospitalized. Be that as it may, my attempt at suicide couldn’t remedy these effects. By tapping into my inner strength, I released a power conducive to my overcoming the harsh reality of being sexually abused.

iOVERCAME

Today, I am thriving and am a witness to the liberty wherewith Christ sets us free. Because of the GRACE granted I became inspired and compelled to reach those whose experience parallels mine. To better serve, I coupled my personal experience with knowledge of sexual abuse. Driven, I joined experts at Penn State First Annual Child Sexual Abuse Conference and conferences alike. These building blocks enabled me to launch The Lighthouse Rescue Radio Ministry -- a beacon of light and source of inspiration for victims of sexual assault. As well, I’ve been featured in articles, magazines, and newspapers; and made guest appearances on television and radio programming deeming them platforms to reach the masses. I am a member of LAFASA & RAINN Speakers' Bureau (anti-sexual assault organizations).
